The Dangers of Radiation
Radiation is broken down into two kinds. It can be non-ionizing and mildly dangerous (think low level radiation like light from a light bulb or a microwave), or it can be ionizing and so high in energy that it can break chemical bonds, meaning it can charge (or ionize) an atom that interacts with it…. which means that it has enough energy to damage your DNA immediately when it passes through the tissues of your body.
Ionizing radiation comes from radioactive material, high voltage equipment, stars and nuclear reactions. It can be natural or man-made. X-rays and medical imaging tests are a good example of man-made ionizing radiation.
A government-funded study that appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine (August, 2009) suggests that as many as 4 million adults in the U.S. under the age of 65 are being exposed to high, potentially cancer-causing levels of radiation from medical imaging tests of unproven value.
Radiation exposure is commonly measured in millisieverts (mSv). According to WebMD, the average person in the U.S. can expect to receive no more than 3mSv of exposure per year from naturally occurring background radiation. An exposure of greater than 20 mSv is considered high, while greater than 3 mSv to 20 mSv is considered moderate.
Myocardial perfusion imaging for heart disease delivers about 15 mSv per test. If you were to add another common procedure, CT Angiography, the two tests together would result in more than 20 mSv of radiation exposure. The risks of these tests may outweigh the benefits!
Any radiation in your body can be damaging. There is truly no safe level. According to the EPA, ionizing radiation has sufficient energy to affect the atoms in living cells. And, it says on the EPA website that exposure to low levels of it encountered in the environment does not cause immediate health effects, but is a minor contributor to our overall cancer risk. There are studies that keep track of groups of people who have been exposed to radiation, including atomic bomb survivors and radiation industry workers. These studies show that radiation exposure increases the chance of getting cancer, and the risk increases as the dose increases: the higher the dose, the greater the risk. Our bodies can repair some of the damage that happens from radiation exposure, but if it can’t keep up, the human body cells may mutate in ways that eventually lead to cancer. If DNA gets damaged and replicates incorrectly, cancers can grow.
